Luftmensch, It’s September

Populate the trees
with hats, smack leaves
against rain
boots, a pink storm-
water task force.
Kick conker shells
until they pop,
release you glossy
and new. Darken into life
like a polaroid; sluice
out of your chest
with your breath.
It’s starting
to rain. It’s raining
umbrellas. No one’s
getting wet.
